Community Energy Savings Smart Thermostat Program for Columbiana Residents | Enroll Today

Reward yourself!

Did you know that using a smart thermostat can help you not only reduce energy use but also earn a reward? Once you have an eligible, Wi-Fi-connected thermostat installed, you can earn $55 by enrolling your thermostat in the City of Columbiana Electric Department’s Community Energy Saving Program.

The City of Columbiana is participating in Community Energy Savings: Smart Thermostat Program, a voluntary program designed to help reduce the cost of electricity. The cost of some electric bill components, like transmission, are based in part on the periods of highest energy consumption in the prior year. Reducing the demand for electricity during those peak periods translates into lower costs for everyone in the community in the following year. By enrolling your smart thermostat in this program, you agree to let the City of Columbiana Electric Department make brief, small adjustments to your thermostat during these times of high electric demand.

Enroll Today

Here’s how the program works:

  • Purchase an eligible smart thermostat if you don’t already have one. Currently eligible smart thermostats can be found here: https://enrollmythermostat.com/faqs/amp-community-energy-savings.
  • Electric customers of the City of Columbiana Electric Department, which participates in Efficiency Smart®, are eligible for up to a $100 rebate on qualifying smart thermostats: https://www.efficiencysmart.org/columbiana-ohio
  • Install and enroll your smart thermostat. Go to https://enrollmythermostat.com/amp-community-energy-savings to confirm your eligibility and enroll.
  • Receive a $55 e-gift card after you’ve successfully enrolled in the program.
  • The City of Columbiana Electric Department may call brief, limited events where your thermostat is automatically adjusted. This will only occur from May 1 through Sept. 30, and we will adjust your thermostat by no more than four degrees for fewer than four hours during times of high demand.
  • You can conveniently opt out of an event by changing your thermostat settings.
  • Maintain your enrollment in the program and you will be entered for a chance to win a $250 e-gift card at the end of each summer season.

 Help your community.

By enrolling in the Community Energy Savings program, you are helping to decrease the demand for electricity during times of peak usage, lowering not only your energy costs, but the costs for everyone in your community.

City Drinking Water Update to Address Residents and Business Owners Inquiries

In light of the Train Derailment that occurred in the Village of East Palestine, the City of Columbiana has been fielding calls this week from our city residents and business owners regarding the safety of our drinking water.  We are in contact with the Ohio EPA and the US EPA, as they regulate water, soil, and air contamination.  We have a good partnership with both agencies, in order to provide our residents with clean safe drinking water.  So far, we have been advised that there is no threat to our source water and air quality tests indicate no cause for concern.

We obtain our water from 11 wells throughout our community before treating the water at a state of the art water treatment plant.   Our wells are in completely separate aquifers from where the incident occurred and our wells are not directly impacted by surface water so we have no reason to believe that our source water has been impacted by this incident.  Out of abundance of caution, we have increased our sampling regime to ensure that we have not been negatively impacted by the incident.

Our local EPA representative offered the following information that may be helpful in answering other related questions.

Taggert Rd. Incident Hotline (234) 542-6474

US EPA has been performing air monitoring in response to the derailment. Information specific to the derailment, including air monitoring results, is available on their webpage:

If you would like to choose to opt-out you will need to send in the bottom portion of the letter or call IGS.

UPDATE | September 12, 2022

The City of Columbiana has entered into an agreement with IGS (Interstate Gas Supply) for the Natural Gas Aggregation Program for the City of Columbiana Residents.

For the utility billing cycles beginning April 2023 through November 2024 the default fixed price to City of Columbiana Natural Gas Aggregation Program Customers shall be $.809 per CCF.

If customers choose to not participate in the aggregation program, Columbia Gas will provide your gas supply along with its typical regulated distribution obligations.

For reference, the default standard choice offer through March 2023 provided by your regulated utility, Columbia Gas of Ohio, is the NYMEX monthly final settlement + a fixed basis adder of  $0.165 per CCF.  So customers choosing the City of Columbiana Gas Aggregation Program  will see a savings of $.015 per CCF for the billing cycles December 2022 through March 2023.

UPDATE | August 2, 2022

Our gas aggregation program negotiators are continuing to monitor the natural gas market prices daily. They are advising to continue holding off for the time being and quickly mobilize for a new price lock/signing date when the market offers some worthwhile downside on pricing.

When a new rate/contract is locked in all city residents, who are not in a current contract, will be placed into the new City gas aggregation program. As always though, you will have the option to opt-out if you chose to do so.

We will continue to post updates here as it becomes available or you may contact City Hall at 330-482-2173 option 6.

UPDATE | May 20, 2022

Discussions were held on May 19, 2022 with the gas aggregation program participating communities and the negotiators.
