Chalk Artists to Cover Main Street in Columbiana with a Patchwork of Colorful Murals

Friday, July 1st at 2pm to Saturday, July 2nd at 4 pm

The Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring their second Chalk on Main event on July 1st & 2nd, 2022.

South Main Street in Columbiana will be closed off for this event which will feature five professional artists and over 20 registered amateur artists. This event has a DORA designation and will be the center of the city’s First Friday Block Party.

Chalk on Main will also host the Vehicle for a Veteran Giveaway sponsored by Boardman Nissan and the Chamber of Commerce.

Professional & Amateur artists will spend over 12 hours creating amazing street art that will wash away in the rain. Using chalk, in the ancient tradition of street painting, artists will create original works or reproduce famous work in a visual explosion of color on Main Street. Everyone is invited to participate in creating art by working on a collaborative piece in the center of the street or grabbing their own spot on the sidewalk for their creation. Lining the center of the street will be over 25 pre-registered pro and amateur artists.

This event is a part of Columbiana’s First Friday Block Party Series. It is a DORA event and there will be food vendors and a DJ. The kids can enjoy chalking, dancing and playing while their parents enjoy creating or watching art being created. There will be doggy art activities as well.

This event is FREE to the public.

The amateur & youth artists that are drawing at Chalk on Main will be competing for Cash prizes and gift certificates. Anyone who is preregistered is automatically entered and others can register on site. The Chamber will provide supplies (chalk, pastels & tempera) while they last.

Beautifully stated by Jennifer Chaparro, Professional Chalk Artist, “Using mostly soft pastel chalks (which are environmentally friendly), we transform the streets and sidewalks into living art. Watching art come to life is considered a performance art and has an immediacy that gives every piece a uniqueness that can never be truly duplicated. The light and surface elements are constantly changing, making the art a constantly evolving entity. This event is also the venue for the Vehicle for a Veteran Giveaway sponsored by Boardman Nissan. Participants have told the sponsors what a new vehicle would mean to them and a winner will be chosen by the Mayor of our sister city Columbiana, Alabama.
